The composer-choreographer Dylan Newcomb ('71, USA/Netherlands) was born in Boston, USA and grew up in the state of Maine. Following his training in dance and music, first at the Walnut Hill School of Performing Arts in Massachusetts and then later at the Juilliard School in New York, he signed a contract with the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) and moved to The Netherlands. From '92 till '99, he danced with NDT in choreographies by Jirí Kylián, Hans van Manen, Ohad Naharin William Forsythe and many others. During his years as a dancer there, Newcomb created several music and dance works. In 1997, he created PAULI- PASSION, a full-evening location project in an old ruined cathedral involving fourteen dancers, full choir and string orchestra in Brandenburg,Germany. In 1998, during the CaDance Festival in Den Haag, he presented the solo, EPILOGUE with music for countertenor and two viola da gambas. In addition to composing for his own dance pieces, he has received several commissions for music scores from other choreographers- among them, a work for the chamber orchestra of the London Royal Ballet, a collaboration with choreographer Cathy Marston.

In the spring of '99, just before leaving NDT, Newcomb created PASSING for the company's yearly workshop, a short dance solo with music for prepared-piano. PASSING went on to appear in several festivals and bring him the Silver Dance Prize of Holland. Shortly after, he received the prestigious Philip Morris Art Award ('00) -awarded for his promising work as a young composer and choreographer. Since this time, he has worked freelance, focusing on the creation of dance and music works. Two additional solo works followed quickly- VIA (Feb '00), an intensely physical abstract solo, and STATIC (CaDance, Nov '00), a strongly visual multimedia based solo. In the spring of 2001, he premiered and toured his second full-evening work, TELL ME ... a work for five dancers and four musicians, commissioned by the Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel in Amsterdam. BREATH, the last of the three solos that join together with STATIC and VIA to form the full-evening trilogy FULL CIRCLE, had it's premiere during the Holland Dance Festival in November 2002, and toured The Netherlands, in February 2002. During it's featured performances during the Festival of Dutch Dance in Maastricht, FULL CIRCLE was awarded the Lucas Hoving Prize for the best dance production of the year. Newcomb's third full evening group work, IMPROVING PARADISE, was premiered during the CaDance festival in The Hague, November 22, 2002, and toured throughout Holland.

Recently projects include two short abstract dance films (made while studying at the New York Film Academy), two group dances for the Rotterdam Dans Academie, a series of experimental street performance projects and a large group dance for the Munich Ballet Theater. Currently, the groundwork is being laid for a quartet of multimedia performance pieces collectively entitled WRITING ON THE WALLS. Four peices on humankinds confrontations with limits and barriers, WISH, BURN, FLOW, and THIS shall be completed over the course of the next three years. The duet and trio, WISH and FLOW recently premiered in Nov'04 in the CaDance Festival in the Hague. The solo evening BURN will be completed a year later, and the group piece THIS in the spring of 2007.
